Scholarship on Kant's practical philosophy has often overlooked its reception in the early days of post-Kantian philosophy and German Idealism. This volume of new essays illuminates that reception and how it informed the development of practical philosophy between Kant and Hegel.

In the sections that follow, we consider these and their corollaries in more detail. Hegel’s absolute idealism, in fact, did try to surpass Kant’s restrictions, but he did it by way of a complete and radical reconstruction of the notion of a thing-in-itself, and thereby, all that which for Kant was ‘illegal’, so to say. This is the view from which I will read here Hegel’s critique of Kant. Hegel’s Critique of Kantian Practical Reason  The only sort of morality that Hegel discusses and critiques in the remainder of Chapter V is  Moralität —individual, rational, reective morality with individual subjectivity as the source of Hegel identified in Kant’s practical philosophy precisely the powerful kind of constructivism about the identification and justification of norms that has recently been explicated by Onora O’Neill. Hegel, however, fundamentally criticized Kant for offering merely a ‘formal’ model of normativity that cannot sufficiently comprehend human action as free. Instead, Hegel argues in his doctrine of ethical life (Sittlichkeit) that the embeddedness of the acting subject must be taken into account when identifying normativity. These two points are connected: for Kant and Fichte, cognitive and practical normativity (how we ought to think, what we ought to do) find their origins in the (either logically or practically necessary) cognitive acts of individuals, while for Hegel, both kinds of normativity are the result of collective, historical development.

Hans Lottenbach & Sergio Tenenbaum - 1995 - Kant-Studien 86 (2):211-230. Kant's postulates are that of "freedom," "the immortality of the soul," and "the existence of God" and, what can also be considered a necessary element in Kant' theory, "the highest good." Hegel's postulates are "the harmony of morality and nature (or happiness)," "the harmony of morality and sensibility (or will in its sensuous form)," and "the existence of God (or a Holy Moral Lawgiver)." While Kantian constructivism has become one of the most influential and systematic schools of thought in analytic moral and political philosophy, Hegelian approaches to practical normativity hold out the promise of building upon Kantian insights into individual self-determination while avoiding their dualistic tendencies. Philosophical anthropology - Philosophical anthropology - The idealism of Kant and Hegel: It might almost seem as though Hume’s destructive analysis of the concept of mind had effectively abolished the way of ideas and with it the whole conception of human personality based on a philosophy of mind. That was not the case, however, and in the years that followed Hume’s death in 1776 a new Second, he devotes roughly equal time to Hegel's discussions of Kant's theoretical and practical philosophy and presents an appealingly unified vision of the Hegelian critique in both areas. Much of the extant literature focuses on one or the other domain. 'Reading this book, it is fascinating to see how Hegel`s practical philosophy can even in its speculative elements be translated into a philosophical language used in moral epistemology today. Kant and Hegel are two of the greatest philosophers of all times. These two German idealist thinkers developed similar themes such as political philosophy, ethics, religion and methaphysics. However, Kant and Hegel adopted quite distinct approaches and contributed in different ways to the history of thinking.

The sequel takes up the period from Fichte to Hegel, with an eye toward understanding how Kantian critical philosophy gave way to Hegelian Absolute Idealism. "While Kant's philosophy incongruously but emphatically joined the critique of metaphysics with Enlightenment rationalism, beginning with Schiller, critique becomes the recurrent procedure and signature of a philosophical tradition committed to undoing the cruel rationalities that underlie and succor modern forms of domination; critique is the self-critique of reason as domination. “While Kant’s philosophy incongruously but emphatically joined the critique of metaphysics with Enlightenment rationalism, beginning with Schiller, critique becomes the recurrent procedure and signature of a philosophical tradition committed to undoing the cruel rationalities that underlie and succor modern forms of domination; critique is the self-critique of reason as domination. Hegel's stance is thus not any kind of "mediatior" between the two extremes, Spinoza and Kant; on the contrary, from a truly Hegelian perspective, the problem with Kant is that he remains all too Spinozean: the crack-less, seamless, positivity of Being is just transposed into the inaccessible In-Itself. 2017-07-19 · \r\r\rImmanuel Kant was acutely aware of living in an age when philosophy would need to supplant the role once played by religion.
